MAKE A PLAN

Career Growth articles have been taken from Plant What Others Throw Away by Paul R. Lloyd. The book will be available in paperback this spring through www.PromiseGarden.com. I’m seeking endorsements from published business authors for the back page and inside front page copy. Call for details: 630-393-6516.

Pull out a road map for your local area. Trace the route you usually take from your home to work or to some other frequent destination. Now, go back and look for a shorter or faster way of getting there. You may find that the little side roads are better than taking the interstate, especially during the rush hour.

Sometimes when you look at a map, you are surprised to discover that what you thought was the shortest way to your destination actually is not. There is another road that you didn’t realize would work better. Planning is like that. When you start writing down the best ideas you have for achieving success, you often will be surprised by a new idea that pops into your head that leads to a better way.

Maps are printed in lots of colors and are complete until somebody builds a new road. Your roadmap to success isn’t like that. On the roadmap to success, the roads are constantly changing. You can always find new ways to go. Write your roadmap to success on silly putty. That way, you can stretch out the details or squeeze down on the rough spots. You can scrunch it all up and start over again. You can squish out one of the steps and add a new one. Never carve your plan in concrete or stone. It’s much too hard to adapt when your plan is written in stone. Write your plan in a way that allows you to make alterations along the way.

Remember that the journey to success is spiritual as well as physical.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Matthew 7:13-14
